Soil-health self-check

Tell us your region and soil, answer a few gentle questions about your ground, and receive faith-framed next steps. Print your results, and ask the Storm Guide for a full plan made for your situation.

1. When you dig a spadeful of soil, how many earthworms do you usually see?

Earthworms are the clearest sign of living soil. They aerate the ground, pull organic matter down and leave behind rich castings. The more you see, the more life your soil is holding.

2. How does your soil feel and look?

Healthy soil holds together in soft, open crumbs that roots and water move through easily. Soil that is pale, dusty or set hard has lost the natural glue that living organisms provide.

3. After heavy rain, what happens to the water?

How quickly rain soaks in tells you how open and sponge-like your soil is. Water that pools or runs straight off is a sign of compaction and low organic matter.

4. How often is your soil left bare?

Bare soil bakes in the sun, washes away in the rain and slowly loses its life. Living roots or a mulch blanket keep the ground fed and protected all year round.

5. What do you feed your soil most?

What you feed the soil decides whether you are building life or replacing it. Compost and cover crops feed the whole web of soil life; synthetic salts feed the plant but slowly starve the ground.
