Clean, warm water for washing is easy to take for granted — until the power or gas is out. A simple solar shower lets the sun heat your water for free, keeping your household clean, healthy and encouraged.

This build uses common hardware-store parts and can be scaled from a single camp bag to a fixed homestead fixture.

What you'll need

  • A dark-colored food-grade water container or dedicated solar shower bag
  • A length of hose or a simple shower-head fitting with a valve
  • Black paint or a black bag/cover (dark surfaces absorb heat)
  • Rope or a sturdy hook to hang it above head height
  • Optional: a small privacy enclosure or curtain

Step by step

    Prepare the vessel

    Use a dark container or paint/cover a light one black so it absorbs the sun’s heat efficiently.

    Fit the outlet

    Attach a hose with a valve or a shower-head fitting near the bottom so gravity provides the flow.

  3. 3

    Heat in the sun

    Fill with water and set in direct sun for a few hours. On a bright day the water can reach a comfortably warm temperature.

    Hang and use

    Lift the warmed vessel above head height on a hook or branch, open the valve, and enjoy a gravity-fed warm shower.

Safety first

Always test the water temperature on your hand first — dark containers in strong sun can get hot enough to scald. Use food-grade containers for anything that may touch your mouth.
