DIY Window Insert to Keep a Room Warm
A removable insulating panel that dramatically cuts heat loss through windows — keeping one room warm on very little fuel.
In cold weather most heat escapes through windows. A simple insulating insert lets you keep one room — your “warm room” — comfortable using a fraction of the energy, which matters enormously when fuel is scarce.
These inserts are inexpensive, removable, and reusable each winter.
What you'll need
- Rigid foam insulation board (sized to the window opening)
- A sharp utility knife and straightedge
- Reflective foil or a light fabric cover (optional, for appearance)
- Weatherstripping or foam tape for a snug seal
- A small handle or tab for easy removal
Step by step

Measure the opening
Measure the inside window frame carefully so the insert fits snugly within it.

Cut the panel
Cut the foam board slightly smaller than the opening, then add weatherstripping around the edge for a tight friction fit.

Finish the face
Cover the room-facing side with fabric or foil for appearance and, with foil, a little extra reflected warmth.

Fit and seal
Press the insert into the frame. It should stay in place by friction and seal out drafts. Add a small tab so you can pull it out for daylight.
