Build a Rocket Stove from Concrete Blocks
A high-efficiency outdoor cook stove you can build in minutes from a handful of blocks — boils water and cooks meals using only small sticks.
A rocket stove burns small twigs and branches with surprising efficiency, giving you a hot cooking fire without gas, charcoal, or a large woodpile. It is one of the fastest, cheapest off-grid cooking tools you can make.
Built from ordinary concrete blocks, it can be assembled and taken apart in minutes — ideal for a backyard, a power outage, or teaching the family how fire and airflow work.
What you'll need
- Six standard concrete/cinder blocks (solid or hollow with openings)
- A metal cooking grate or a few metal bars
- Dry twigs and small sticks for fuel
- A flat, non-flammable surface (bare soil, gravel or paving)
Step by step
- 1
Lay the base
Place one block flat as the foundation on level, non-flammable ground, well away from anything that can catch fire.

Form the burn chamber
Stack blocks so their openings create an L-shaped tunnel — a horizontal opening to feed sticks and a vertical chimney above it.

Create the fuel shelf
Rest a small metal bar or piece of grate inside the feed opening so sticks sit up off the floor. Air flowing underneath is what makes a rocket stove burn hot and clean.

Add the pot support
Place a metal grate across the top of the chimney so a pot sits above the flame with a small gap for exhaust.

Light and feed
Start a small fire in the feed opening and push sticks in as they burn. Feed slowly — a little wood makes a lot of heat.
Safety first
Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated open space — never indoors. Keep water nearby, and let the blocks cool fully before handling.
