Your Get-Home Bag
A compact kit for your car or workplace that helps you get safely back to your family if disruption strikes while you are away.

Emergencies rarely wait until you are home. A get-home bag is a smaller kit kept in your vehicle or at work, designed for one purpose: to help you travel safely back to your household on foot if you must.
It is lighter than a bug-out bag and focused on the journey home — water, comfortable walking, weather protection and navigation.
What you'll need
- A low-profile backpack
- Water and a compact filter
- A day of no-cook snacks
- Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate layers
- A small first-aid kit, headlamp and power bank
- A local paper map with your route home marked
- A small amount of cash and a printed contact card
Step by step
- 1
Plan your route home
Map one or two walking routes from work to home, noting water sources and safe places to rest.
- 2
Pack for the walk
Prioritize comfortable shoes, water and weather protection over bulk. You are traveling light and moving.
- 3
Keep it with you
Store the bag in your vehicle or at your workplace, not at home where it cannot help you.
- 4
Tell your family the plan
Make sure your household knows your routes and roughly how long the walk would take, so they can expect you.

Spiritual reflection
The shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to bring the one safely home. The longing to get home to those we love echoes God’s own heart for us.
“The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth.”
