Wholesome Food

Deep Pantry Starter

A deep pantry is simply an extension of the food you already eat. Buy a little extra each week, store what your family actually uses, and rotate it into daily meals so nothing is wasted.

Build the foundation

Focus on wholesome staples that store well and stretch far.

  • Grains and flours: rice, oats, wheat berries, cornmeal
  • Legumes: dried beans, lentils, and split peas
  • Cooking basics: salt, oil, honey, and baking supplies
  • Home-canned or store-bought fruits and vegetables

Store it well

  • Keep staples in airtight, food-grade containers
  • Store in a cool, dark, dry place
  • Protect against pests and moisture
  • Label everything with the date it was stored

Rotate so nothing is wasted

  • Use the oldest items first and restock behind them
  • Cook from your pantry regularly, not only in emergencies
  • Keep a simple inventory list on the door or wall
  • Add a few extra items to your normal shopping each week
